Much of the continental U.S. can expect weather that's not just a little colder than usual next week: Temperatures east of the Rockies could run 20-30 degrees below normal. Tide after tide of Arctic cold has been moving south from Canada. "One wave of cold came in late last week, another is moving in today and tomorrow, and the coldest blast by far moves in early next week," a CNN meteorologist said. For Monday through Wednesday, the National Weather Service said, high temperatures won't be so high — 170 records could fall. Expect "a little taste of January in November," a Weather Channel meteorologist tweeted. It could be the coldest Veterans Day recorded in some places, and the high on Tuesday might well be in the 30s in Alabama, per USA Today.
The cold has already caused weirdness. When people in the Kansas City area reported an odd odor, the Weather Service investigated. The finding: That unpleasant smell of manure had been trapped in a part of the atmosphere that the cold front brought with it from a large stock farm in Albert Lea, Minnesota, to Kansas City. (Denver experienced a record temperature drop last month.)
