With the help of leaders from other European nations, Germany marked the fall of the Berlin Wall 30 years ago with ceremonies, reenactments and an examination of the historic event's meaning. "The Berlin Wall, ladies and gentlemen, is history, and it teaches us: No wall that keeps people out and restricts freedom is so high or so wide that it can’t be broken down," Chancellor Angela Merkel said at a service, USA Today reports. Merkel grew up in communist East Germany, which the wall separated from democratic West Berlin during the Cold War. Representatives of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, which were part of the Soviet Union, said the collapse of the wall brought hope to their nations, as well. "It was the beginning of the end of communist tyranny in Europe," they said.
In a statement, President Trump congratulated Germany and said, "The United States and our allies and partners remain steadfast in our unwavering allegiance to advancing the principles of individual liberty and freedom," per the AP. But a pro-democracy group in Germany took the opportunity to take a shot at Trump's plans for walling off Mexico from the US, per Newsweek. The organization, the Open Society, has sent the president a section of the Berlin Wall with the inscription, "We would like to give you one of the last pieces of the failed Berlin Wall to commemorate the United States' dedication to building a world without walls." The section, which weighs nearly 3 tons, was shipped by air to New York, then trucked to Washington for delivery Saturday night.
