A missing California hiker has been found dead atop a glacier. CNN reports Alan Stringer, 40, of Huntington Beach, didn't return home on Monday from a hike. A three-day search followed, and his body was ultimately located at the top of the Darwin Glacier in Kings Canyon National Park. His phone showed no calls made after he began his hike, and the Visalia Times-Delta reports that while he carried an inReach GPS device, it wasn't activated. No cause of death has been provided.
KTLA reports he hadn't communicated specifics on his planned hike to anyone. On Facebook, the Inyo County Sheriff's Office noted that Stringer "was described as an experienced hiker ... [who] recently purchased and ice ax and crampons, and participated in mountaineering training courses. Stringer was equipped for day-hiking only." He leaves behind a wife who is 37 weeks pregnant with the couple's first child. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to support her and the baby. (More hiker death stories.)
