Neil Young Answered Honestly. Now, a Delayed Citizenship

Neil Young answered a question on his US citizenship application honestly, and it's costing him. The singer admitted that, yes, he has used marijuana, and as a result the application process has been delayed, the Guardian reports. Young, who's Canadian but is well known as, per the newspaper, "a figurehead of the Los Angeles 1960s-'70s Laurel Canyon scene," says in a letter posted on his website that he passed the test for US citizenship, but has now been told he "must do another test, due to my use of marijuana and how some people who smoke it have exhibited a problem."

Young, who has been critical of President Trump, wants dual citizenship so he can vote. "I sincerely hope I have exhibited good moral character and will be able to vote my conscience on Donald J. Trump and his fellow American candidates (as yet un-named)," he writes in his letter. Young had previously planned to take the oath of citizenship soon after turning 74 on Tuesday, he told the Los Angeles Times last month. The paper notes he's lived two-thirds of his life in the States and is married to Daryl Hannah. "I'm still a Canadian; there's nothing that can take that away from me," he said at the time. "But I live down here; I pay taxes down here; my beautiful family is all down here—they're all Americans, so I want to register my opinion." (More Neil Young stories.)
