Ann Coulter showed up Wednesday night at the school she once called a "radical thuggish institution," and protesters were there in force to greet her. The San Francisco Chronicle reports hundreds of demonstrators were on hand—KTVU says it was "several hundred," while protest organizer Atlas Winfrey tells Newsweek the number may have been up to 2,000—before the ultra-conservative pundit known for her anti-immigration stance gave a speech at Wheeler Hall on the UC Berkeley campus. Video taken outside the venue shows event attendees being guarded by police as they make their way inside, while other footage shows protesters chanting and holding up signs. And then, video of a smiling Coulter herself being escorted into the hall—what she later called her "red carpet walk." Chants against Coulter included "She's a fascist!" and "Nazi!," per Newsweek.
KTVU reports protesters set up a "human chain" to keep attendees out of Wheeler Hall; when the event finally started, the auditorium was about two-thirds full. One heckler had to be removed, while another was allowed to stay after agreeing to stay quiet. Fox News notes the event started about 15 minutes late due to the protests. UC Berkeley Police tweeted that "multiple masked protesters" were arrested by the end of the night, with KTVU noting that covering one's face is against the college's protesting policy. Winfrey tells Newsweek that one arrested protester was being held by police, with bail set at $60,000. (Coulter in 2017 caused controversy at the university when she canceled a speech there after her sponsors started dropping out.)
