The Basque separatist group ETA has declared an end to its 15-month ceasefire, and Spanish authorities are gearing up for the possibility of bombings at tourist sites this summer. ETA blames the return to violence on PM José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero's "fascism"; addressing the nation on TV, Zapatero called for peace, saying it's what both Basques and Spaniards want.
Zapatero's commitment to peace talks has incited protests by the opposition, which labels him a traitor. ETA, branded a terrorist group by the EU and the US, has killed more than 800 people since 1968 in its campaign to establish an independent homeland.
