Some people don't like the fact that Harvey Weinstein is out from behind bars while he awaits his January trial on rape and sexual assault charges. Now, a New York City prosecutor wants to make the disgraced movie producer's release conditions more onerous, asking a judge to increase the bail amount from $1 million to $5 million, the Guardian reports. The reason for Assistant District Attorney Joan Illuzzi's request: She says Weinstein has been disabling the electronic monitoring device he wears on his ankle. At a pretrial hearing Friday, Illuzzi said the 67-year-old has sometimes dropped off the radar for hours at a time; there were dozens of violations over the past few months, she said, per the New York Daily News and Page Six.
"It defies logic to believe that he cannot navigate taking his device with him when he travels outside his home," Illuzzi said at the hearing. Weinstein attorney Donna Rotunno scoffs at the accusation that her client is purposely messing with the monitor, instead saying tech "glitches" like dead batteries and a lack of cellphone towers are causing the drop-offs. "It has nothing to do with any manipulation of the bracelet," she says, adding he did acknowledge once forgetting a piece of the device at home but called it in as soon as he realized it. Weinstein, who has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him, won't hear an update on the bail request until next week. Meanwhile, sources tell Page Six that Weinstein's decidedly not-fit appearance on Friday is due to the fact that he's suffering from adult-onset diabetes, back problems, and other health issues.
