Crews Find Skiers Hit by Avalanche

An avalanche in the Swiss Alps left six people buried in the snow Thursday. They either managed to get themselves out or were rescued, CNN reports, and two of them were flown to a hospital with minor injuries. A search crew that included 25 skiers and three helicopters scoured a slope at the SkiArena resort in Andermatt, Switzerland. The avalanche began just before 11am. "This was a relatively large avalanche: 20 by 50 metres," a police spokesman said, per the Local. The search was called off after 6pm when officials concluded that no one else was missing. The slope was declared safe but will be closed Friday during the investigation. (More avalanche stories.)
