New York magazine is out with a profile of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez after her first year in office, and the progressive does not sound thrilled about being in the same party as moderates such as, say, Joe Biden. Reporter David Freelander asked about her hypothetical role in Congress if Biden were president, and this is the response: “'Oh God,' she said with a groan. 'In any other country, Joe Biden and I would not be in the same party, but in America, we are.'" Her point is that the progressive wing of the party is miles apart from moderates and even further from its conservative fringe, which she likens to a "tea party of the left."
The Democratic party, she says, "can be too big of a tent." A post at Axios says the comments are "reflective of the widening split between moderates and progressives" in the party as the 2020 campaign gets into gear. The full New Yorker story touches on the buzz (as reported in Politico) about AOC running for the White House in 2024. But it also notes that a run for the Senate against Chuck Schumer in 2022 or Kirsten Gillibrand in 2024 are other possibilities. (AOC is a strong backer of Bernie Sanders.)
