A Monmouth University poll released Wednesday shows that Mike Bloomberg's strategy might be working. The former mayor of New York came in at 9%, good for fourth place with Democratic voters nationally. That's 4 points higher than last month and is Bloomberg's best showing so far in a national poll, Politico reports. Joe Biden topped the field at 30%, up from 26% a month ago; Bernie Sanders was at 23%, up 2 points, and Elizabeth Warren came in third with 14%, down 3 points. Pete Buttigieg, Amy Klobuchar and Andrew Yang—in that order—trailed Bloomberg. A CNN poll also released Wednesday showed Bloomberg down a peg, in fifth place, at 5%.

Bloomberg's plan is unlike that of any of those rivals. He entered the race late, is passing on Iowa and New Hampshire, and isn't vying for a spot on the debate stage yet. Instead, he's adding endorsements and spending millions of his own money on ads. There was evidence in the Monmouth poll to support that strategy, NBC points out: 56% of Democrats surveyed said the early states have too much say in the race. And 57% of registered voters overall want a new president elected this year. (More Michael Bloomberg stories.)
