Mazel tov: El Chapo's daughter has married the nephew of another drug boss. Alejandrina Guzman, daughter of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, married Edgar Cazares on Jan. 25 in Sinaloa’s state capital, Culiacan, Reuters reports. As the UK Times explains, Cazares is the nephew of Blanca Margarita Cazares, another alleged drug trafficker. She was sanctioned by the US Treasury in 2007 over her links to members of the Sinaloa cartel, which El Chapo ran for decades before his 2016 arrest and subsequent extradition to the US, and her "sophisticated money laundering apparatus," per Reuters. The Sun says she's known as "The Empress" of the drug trafficking world.

Reuters describes the wedding at the Roman Catholic cathedral in the city as "extravagant," "lavish," and "a new display of her family’s prominence," with a popular Mexican band and singer performing and fireworks going off. The Times, which notes Guzman arrived in a bulletproof car, says "much of the center of the city was sealed off and under apparent control of a drug cartel’s security team." Guzman last year launched the "El Chapo 701" fashion brand (a reference to her father being named the 701st richest person in the world in 2009), and as of January, it sells beer, too. Instead of a father-daughter dance, since her father is serving a life sentence in the US, she took to the dance floor with her mother, El Chapo's first wife. (More El Chapo stories.)
