A woman trapped in "excruciating pain" next to a highway in South Carolina had to use her toes to summon help, authorities say. Trouble began for the 54-year-old resident of Charlotte, NC, when she got a flat tire on I-95 Sunday night, CNN reports. She was in the breakdown lane replacing the tire "when the jack slipped causing the car to fall, crushing both of her hands between the tire and the fender," the fire department in Colleton County says. Officials say the woman, whose hands were trapped, spent 35 minutes trying to get her shoe off and dial 911 with her toes. When she finally succeeding in making the call, help arrived within 8 minutes and firefighters used a prybar and a hydraulic spreader to free her. NBC reports that she was taken to a trauma center with severe damage to her hands and fingers. (More South Carolina stories.)
