Natalie Portman's outfit on the Oscars red carpet got a lot of press thanks to the embroidery along the edge of her cape, which listed names of female directors not nominated for best director at the Academy Awards (only men were nominated this year). But not only was fellow actress Rose McGowan not impressed, she was disgusted. "I find Portman's type of activism deeply offensive to those of us who actually do the work," McGowan writes in a Facebook post, explaining that while the cape is the type of protest that gets lots of mainstream media attention, it doesn't mean much unless the person wearing it also "[walks] the walk." In McGowan's opinion, Portman doesn't. "Natalie, you have worked with two female directors in your very long career—one of them was you. You have a production company that has hired exactly one female director—you."
Per the Guardian, McGowan isn't exactly correct: Portman has worked with three female directors, including herself, and her production company did have a second female director originally tied to one of its films, but she left. "What is it with actresses of your ilk? You 'A-listers' ... could change the world if you'd take a stand instead of being the problem. Yes, you, Natalie. You are the problem. Lip service is the problem," McGowan writes. Meanwhile, McGowan was getting called out online for another recent comment she made calling out Snoop Dogg for threatening Gayle King over her controversial interview with Lisa Leslie on Kobe Bryant. "Liberal leeches like Amy Schumer and Rose McGowan get to hide behind Gayle King and Oprah Winfrey slandering and attacking black men," reads one sample response.
