In a week where the US saw three consecutive days of more than 55,000 new coronavirus cases, with Florida, Texas, and California all experiencing record daily death rates, President Trump was put in the hot seat on the pandemic on Fox News Thursday night—but he didn't point the finger at himself, notes the Independent. In a phone interview, Sean Hannity asked Trump how he felt about the renewed virus spike in multiple states, as well as about recent remarks from Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious-disease expert on COVID-19 (Hannity didn't cite which of Fauci's comments he was talking about). "Dr. Fauci is a nice man, but he's made a lot of mistakes," Trump replied, per NBC News. "Like, you don't have to ban them coming in from very infected China," Trump added, per the Washington Post. "I did it anyway, and we saved hundreds of thousands of lives."
The Dispatch Fact Check notes Fauci did actually agree with the China travel ban. Trump then went on to rail against advice from health experts in general. "They have been wrong about a lot of things, including face masks," he said, per the Post. "Maybe they are wrong, maybe not. But a lot of them said, don't wear a mask, don't wear a mask. And now they are saying, wear a mask." He added, per NBC: "A lot of mistakes were made, a lot of mistakes." The Post notes that early on during the pandemic, health experts were recommending that the general public not rush out to buy masks, mainly because they wanted to ensure health care professionals had enough to go around.
