Blood Sugar Control Can Kill Diabetics

Intensive blood sugar control can actually provoke heart attacks and strokes in some diabetes patients, USA Today reports. Scientists canned one US study 4 months ago after high-risk diabetes 2 subjects died more often under aggressive treatment. In another study, blood-sugar control helped their kidneys, but failed to stop heart-related deaths.

"The path we thought was clear for preventing these complications in diabetics has now been thrown into question," said one Yale doctor. The studies add to worries that some  gauges such as blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure fail to indicate the effectiveness of a treatment. In recent years, three diabetes drugs improved cholesterol or blood sugar ratings, but proved otherwise useless or even fatal. (More scientific study stories.)
