This election season is shaping up as a windfall for television stations, with some $3 billion likely to be spent on TV ads, about 27% of that on the presidential race, reports USA Today. Democrat Barack Obama’s campaign—with no spending cap because Obama turned down public campaign funds—will likely lead the charge into broadcast and cable TV spending.

But John McCain’s Republican campaign, which accepted the $84 million in public funding, is likely to spend just as much, fueled by the deep pockets of the Republican national party. Experts say the two will likely spend heavily in Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Michigan, but are likely to fill the coffers of stations in fringe states as well. (More John McCain stories.)
