A mom-to-be's weekend celebration ended in tragedy after she was fatally gunned down in Philadelphia. According to the city's police department, the seven-months-pregnant woman—IDed by sources as Jessica Covington, 32, per CBS Philly—was outside her home around 8:30pm Saturday, unloading gifts out of her Kia Soul from the baby shower that had just been thrown in her honor, when gunfire rang out. Police say Covington was hit in the head and stomach, with nearly a dozen gunshots aimed at her abdomen.
Per a police spokeswoman, a cop who was in the area heard the gunshots and rushed to the scene, reports CNN. Covington was taken by police to a nearby medical center, where she was pronounced dead; just a few minutes later, the same announcement was made for her unborn child. "This heinous crime has sent shock waves throughout the country," Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said in a statement, adding that the shooting comes at a time when the city is nearing a "grim milestone": its 500th homicide this year.
ABC News notes that number is the record for homicides in Philadelphia, set in 1990. In 2020, the city registered 499 homicides. The sources who spoke to CBS say this weekend's shooting was "domestic in nature," though no details have yet emerged. Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney says there's now a $50,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest. "This news is deeply upsetting and heartbreaking," he tweeted Sunday morning. "My heart goes out to the victim's loved ones during this painful time." (More pregnant women stories.)
