Kenneth Starr, the independent counsel whose criminal probe of former President Clinton led to his impeachment, died last week at the age of 76. But while it's probably safe to say there was no love lost between Clinton and his legal nemesis, the former president kept his feelings close to the vest during an interview that aired Sunday on CNN. "Do you have any thoughts?" Fareed Zakaria asked Clinton on Starr's death, noting that Starr had turned Clinton's presidency "upside down." Clinton's polite reply: "Well, I read the obituary, and I realized that his family loved him, and I think that's something to be grateful for. And when your life is over, that's all there is to say."

Starr's investigation, which started in 1994, looked into an Arkansas land deal known as Whitewater and its ties to Bill and Hillary Clinton, per Politico. The probe helped make public the affair Bill Clinton had with intern Monica Lewinsky, which led to his 1998 impeachment. "I was taught not to talk about the people that I ... I have nothing to say," Clinton added to Zakaria with a nervous laugh. "Except I'm glad he died with the love of his family." The Hill notes that Lewinsky echoed those sentiments last week in her own tweet on the subject. "[A]s i'm sure many can understand, my thoughts about ken starr bring up complicated feelings ... but of more importance, is that i imagine it's a painful loss for those who love him," she wrote the day the news of his death broke.
