New York congressman Lee Zeldin, the GOP candidate in the state's gubernatorial race, says his family is safe after two teens were shot outside his home Sunday afternoon. The 17-year-old boys were walking with another teen along the Long Island street when they were struck with gunfire from a drive-by shooting, ABC 7 reports. They attempted to hide in Zeldin's yard in the town of Shirley. Zeldin's twin daughters, age 16, were home at the time and heard gunshots and then screams. They locked themselves in the bathroom and called 911, and the injured boys were found on the family's property. There is no connection between the teens and the Zeldin family.

"The two of them were at the kitchen table doing homework and they hear gunshots," Zeldin tells CBS New York of his daughters. "One of the bullets was actually found about 30 feet from where they were sitting." Zeldin's family gave police footage from their home security system as police search for the suspects. Increased crime has been a big focus of Zeldin's campaign, the AP reports. "Like so many New Yorkers, crime has literally made its way to our front door," he says. "I'm standing in front of crime scene tape in front of my own house. You can't get me more outraged than right now." (Zeldin was also attacked at a campaign rally over the summer.)
