The self-described "incel" who plotted to "slaughter" sorority girls and kill thousands in a mass shooting in 2020 pleaded guilty Tuesday. Tres Genco, 22, of Ohio faces a possible sentence of up to life behind bars in the case, NBC News reports; the hate crime charge he pleaded guilty to was "attempting to conduct a mass shooting of women," per a Justice Department press release. "The gender-based hate and bias-motivated threat of violence exhibited by this defendant simply has no place in our society," says an assistant attorney general in the release. "Incel" stands for "involuntary celibate"; Genco wrote a manifesto in which he said he wanted to kill women "out of hatred, jealousy, and revenge."

Investigators say they found a note from the summer of 2019 in which Genco wrote that the "KC," believed to stand for "kill count," "needs to be huge! 3,000? Aim big then." It also included the name of an Ohio university that has not been made public; authorities say Genco carried out surveillance at that university, ABC News reports. Prosecutors say Genco also expressed sympathy for another "incel" mass shooter on an online forum; armed himself with a rifle, semi-automatic pistol, ammunition, and bowie knife; and outfitted himself with tactical gear including a bulletproof vest. The manifesto included a reference to the same date that the other "incel" mass shooting took place on a California university campus. (More incel stories.)
