Mariah Carey isn't getting the holiday gift she wanted from the US Patent and Trademark Office. The office on Tuesday denied the singer's request to trademark "Queen of Christmas," after rejecting her applications for "QOC" and "Princess Christmas" earlier this month, per the Washington Post. Carey laid claim to the title based on a 2021 Billboard article that dubbed her the "undisputed Queen of Christmas," due to the popularity of her 1994 hit "All I Want for Christmas Is You." But Elizabeth Chan waged a monthslong battle in opposition and emerged the victor.
Chan puts out Christmas music exclusively—she has a 2021 album called Queen of Christmas—and was bestowed the same title by the New Yorker in 2018. In denying Carey's application, the trademark office noted the singer had failed to respond to Chan's objections, per the BBC. It's unclear why. Chan accused Carey of "trademark bullying" and previously noted Carey's claim would've applied to a whole slew of items, from skin care products to dog collars.
"Christmas is a season of giving, not the season of taking, and it is wrong for an individual to attempt to own and monopolize a nickname like Queen of Christmas for the purposes of abject materialism," Chan says, per USA Today. Darlene Love, another singer long ago declared the Queen of Christmas by David Letterman, also celebrated the decision, congratulating "all the other Queen of Christmases around the world, living and whom have passed."
