Prosecutor: One UVa Victim Was Shot as He Slept

The University of Virginia student accused of killing three football players on a bus as a field trip wrapped up shot one victim as he slept, according to a witness. That was one of the details Albemarle County Commonwealth's Attorney James Hingeley shared during Christopher Darnell Jones Jr.'s first court appearance on Wednesday; the 22-year-old appeared via video link from jail. Hingeley cited the witness as saying Jones appeared to target "certain people" and was "not randomly shooting." Devin Chandler was the victim who was reportedly shot while asleep, reports NBC News; D'Sean Perry and Lavel Davis Jr. were also killed around 10:30pm Sunday following a trip to Washington, DC, to see a play.

Chandler and Davis Jr. were both wide receivers on UVa's team and Perry was a linebacker. The university on Wednesday canceled its last home game of the season. Jones has been charged with three counts of second-degree murder, five counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and two counts of malicious wounding, which CNN reports are in connection with two victims who were shot but survived. Hingeley identified those injured as Marlee Morgan and UVa running back Michael Hollins. As of Tuesday, one of them had been discharged, but the other remained in serious condition. Jones was ordered held without bond and will next be in court on Dec. 8, reports the Washington Post. (More UVa shooting stories.)
