Buzz about a possible Oscar nod for Heath Ledger's Joker has been circulating since long before last week's release of The Dark Knight, but could others behind the film be honored, too? In the Los Angeles Times, Tom O'Neil looks at past honorees involved in the film's creation.

  • Lee Smith was nominated for an editing Oscar for Master and Commander.

  • Ian Hunter was nominated for visual effects in Spider-Man 3 and Live Free or Die Hard.
  • Cinematographer Wally Pfister was nominated for The Prestige as well as the Caped Crusader’s previous romp, Batman Begins.
  • James Newton Howard and Hans Zimmer have combined for 14 music nominations, with the latter scooping up a statue for The Lion King.
