Defining Olympic Moment? Phelps By a Hair

Sure, if Michael Phelps wins his eighth Olympic gold, as he’s expected to do in the men’s relay, all eyes will be on him. And we’ll wonder (even more) if he’s all human or part-fish. But the Olympics' "defining fabulous moment" has already passed, writes Thomas Boswell in the Washington Post. It zipped by when Phelps won his seventh race by the width of a hair.

And like many defining moments, it was peppered with controversy. The coach of silver medalist Milorad Cavic filed a protest, but withdrew it. “We all know electronics are imperfect,” says Cavic, who lost by .01 seconds. “It’s possible [I won]. I’m not about fighting it. I didn't beat Michael Phelps. But perhaps I'm the only guy who had a chance to beat him."  (More Michael Phelps stories.)
