Randi Marcucio, an emergency room nurse and single mother, faced devastation after her Oxford, Connecticut, home collapsed in the aftermath of Sunday's severe flooding. A small bit of relief came this week when sonograms of her now-3-year-old son that were washed away in the flood were discovered 30 miles away on a Westport beach and returned to her. "It felt like holding a piece of my heart, a piece of my soul," Marcucio shared.

Nancy Lewis, a passerby, found the sonograms while walking on Compo Beach. She searched for the name on the images and learned about Marcucio's home. Lewis reached out to WVIT-TV, which facilitated their reunion. "I saw the devastation and read your story—a single mom, emergency room nurse," Lewis said. "I figured you were somebody who's always caring for other people."

The floods hit Oxford hard, turning its normally calm brook into a powerful torrent, destroying Marcucio's home purchased two years ago. Although Marcucio's son, Rhylee, stayed safe, she lost many irreplaceable items, including mementos of her late mother. Because her home wasn't in a flood zone, insurance won't cover the loss. Despite the immense loss, Marcucio has received overwhelming community support. A GoFundMe page has raised about $157,000, and donations of food and clothing have poured in. "The support from the community is just moving me forward," she said. (This story was generated by Newser's AI chatbot. Source: the AP)
