Obama must tell story of our economic future

It’s time for Barack Obama to drop the “Change We Can Believe In” slogan in favor of something closer to “Change Before It’s Too Late,” writes Frank Rich in the New York Times. The former phrase fit the Democratic primary throwdown, but now Obama must focus on John McCain, "an unstable bridge back not just to Bush policies but to an increasingly distant 20th-century America." The Dem needs to present a way out of the economic “quagmire” that could bring the country to its knees.

“Economic anxiety is the new terrorism,” Rich notes. Americans’ chief concern isn’t the Iraq war or racial politics—it’s losing our footing on the world economic stage. Obama shouldn’t fear going negative against John McCain; “pacifist politics is an oxymoron.” He must help America get to know who McCain really is while telling a “tale of serious economic, educational, energy and health-care mobilization at home.” (More Barack Obama stories.)
