Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm will hold hearings next week on allegations that Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick misled City Council for personal gain, the Detroit News reports. The proceedings, which could remove Kilpatrick from public office for 3 years, are above and beyond criminal perjury and assault charges the beleaguered mayor faces.

"We intend to present evidence that proves the mayor did not misuse public funds for personal gain and that there was no failure to appropriately inform City Council about the facts of the court-ordered settlement," responded Kilpatrick's lawyer. "Our only expectation for the hearing is that it is rooted in law and not the political pressures that have surrounded this matter." (More Kwame Kilpatrick stories.)
