Indictments Be Damned, Stevens Wins Alaska Primary

Alaska’s Ted Stevens, the longest-serving Republican in the Senate, may be facing federal charges, but he’ll also be running for re-election after drawing 63% of the vote in his primary race yesterday, reports the AP. And, says Stevens, 84, his upcoming fight with popular Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich will be a “piece of cake” despite his scheduled September trial.

Begich easily won the Democratic primary over two minor challengers with 91% of the vote. In last month's indictment, federal prosecutors allege Stevens lied on Senate disclosure reports to conceal more than $250,000 in home renovations and gifts from executives at an oil services contractor. Stevens has pleaded not guilty, and his trial in Washington starts Sept. 22. (More Ted Stevens stories.)
