President Trump called for "Peace and Harmony" in the Middle East after Iran fired missiles at a US base in Qatar on Monday—and soon afterward, he announced that a ceasefire deal had been reached between Israel and Iran. He said that the agreement would take effect after both sides had completed "final missions" and that he hopes it will become permanent, CNN reports. Neither Israel nor Iran immediately confirmed a deal. Vice President JD Vance described the fighting as "effectively over." But the Israeli military said early Tuesday that it had intercepted several drones sent from Iran, per the New York Times. Heavy Israeli strikes continued to hit Tehran and other Iranian cities early Tuesday, per the AP. And Israel issued an evacuation order for parts of Tehran, per the Guardian, saying people should stay out of them "in the coming hours."
- "It has been fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran that there will be a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE (in approximately 6 hours from now, when Israel and Iran have wound down and completed their in progress, final missions!), for 12 hours, at which point the War will be considered, ENDED!" Trump said in a Truth Social post.
- "Officially, Iran will start the CEASEFIRE and, upon the 12th Hour, Israel will start the CEASEFIRE and, upon the 24th Hour, an Official END to THE 12 DAY WAR will be saluted by the World," Trump said.
- "On the assumption that everything works as it should, which it will, I would like to congratulate both Countries, Israel and Iran, on having the Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence to end, what should be called, 'THE 12 DAY WAR,'" Trump added. "This is a War that could have gone on for years, and destroyed the entire Middle East, but it didn't, and never will!"
Trump later told NBC News there's no time limit on the ceasefire. "It's going to go forever," he said. Calling the conflict completely over, Trump said he doesn't believe Israel and Iran "will ever be shooting at each other again." House Speaker Mike Johnson praised Trump, saying, "It's a really remarkable achievement." The Republican said he expects to be briefed on the situation on Tuesday, per CNN.
