Undone by a misfiring bullpen and generally sloppy play, Reds manager Jerry Narron was dismissed after compiling a .470 in slightly more than two seasons. His interim replacement is advance scout Pete Mackanin, who also took over for the division rival Pirates in 2005, when fiery blusterer Lloyd McClendon was fired with 26 games left in the season.

Narron's easygoing manner came off as overly lackadaisical given the team's high rate of errors; Mackanin is expected to preach better fundamentals. Said the Reds owner, with the team (31-51) on pace to lose 100 games: "If we don't get this worked out, I'm liable to fire myself someday." (More MLB stories.)
