Defending champ Amelie Mauresmo fell to 14th seed Nicole Vaidisova today at Wimbledon, making her earliest exit in six years in a match punctuated by rain delays and a brain freeze by the chair umpire. The 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 6-1 victory landed the 18-year-old Vaidisova in her first Wimbledon quarterfinal and extended a miserable season for Mauresmo.

Mauresmo staked out a 4-2 first-set lead before the showers struck. After the tiebreak, the chair ump lost track of service and which end was whose to start the second set. Vaidisova took control in the third set, and the match ended, after 2:19 of play spread over 4 hours, with Mauresmo putting a service return into the net. (More Amelie Mauresmo stories.)
