Wall Street is reeling, but the real depression has set in among Republicans who seem resigned to losing the White House. "Yet for all the gloom, there are several reasons why this race is by no means over," Victor David Hanson writes for the National Review. The neocon Democrat sees "certain deer-in-the-headlights moments among Obama’s handlers."

The economy could stage a comeback, and “any day in which hysteria is not the topic of the day benefits McCain,” says Hanson, adding that voters are tired of being force-fed a steady diet of pro-Obama rhetoric. McCain could also benefit from lingering questions about Obama’s associations, which “suggest a pattern unbecoming of a future President of the United States.”
