UK Charges 1st Bomb-Plot Suspect

Britain has moved to the highest level of terror alert, 'critical', after two car bombs were defused in the capital, and a suspected terrorist attack at Glasgow airport. The first of the eight suspects in the failed car-bomb attacks on Glasgow and London appeared in court today to answer to a charge of conspiracy to cause explosions. Bilal Abdullah, 27, a native of Britain who trained as a doctor in Iraq, confirmed his name and address but otherwise did not speak and was returned to custody, Reuters reports.

Abdullah was in the Jeep that rammed the Glasgow airport terminal with Khalid (aka Kaleef) Ahmed, an Indian engineer who remains hospitalized with severe burns. The two were the masterminds of the Al-Qaeda-linked plot, the New York Times reports, and investigators are trying to determine what roles the other six men and one woman identified as suspects played.
