300 in Limbo as Houston's Last Ike Shelter Closes

The Red Cross will boot nearly 300 Hurricane Ike survivors from its remaining Houston shelter Sunday, the Chronicle reports, leaving them to the care of federal and local agencies some accuse of “ridiculous lies.” The possibility of transitional housing does little for one FEMA reject, who was told her still-soggy apartment was livable, but faces Child Protective Services action if she moves back.

“Right now I'm just waiting,” said the woman, on line with one of her three children to talk to a FEMA rep. “I can't do anything but wait.” Added another, who lost her home and car to Ike, then had her ID and purse stolen in a shelter: “I don't know what's wrong with this government.
