Two suicide car bombs killed at least 85 people in the Kurdish city of Kirkuk today, exploding within 20 minutes of each other at the headquarters of a Kurdish political party and a busy market, the AP reports. Some of the victims were trapped on a bus and burned to death, according to Reuters.

Even as the US troop surge has pushed insurgents out of Baghdad and central Iraq, many of those Sunni extremists have found their way north to attack the country’s Kurdish population. The first of today's attacks targeted the headquarters of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, the party of Iraqi president Jalal Talabani. (More Kurds stories.)
