President-elect Barack Obama plans to nominate Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton as his secretary of state on Monday, said Democratic officials. To clear the way for his wife to take the job, former President Bill Clinton agreed to disclose the names of every contributor—more than 200,000 in all—to his foundation. He'll also refuse donations from foreign governments to the Clinton Global Initiative, his annual charitable conference.
Bill Clinton reportedly signed off on a total of nine conditions that go beyond the requirements of the law, the New York Times notes. He decided to make public his donor list to avoid any appearances of a conflict of interest with his wife's diplomatic duties. The former president also agreed to submit his speeches to the State Department and, if necessary, to the White House.
