Seven major Sunni terrorist organizations have formed a public political alliance aimed at negotiating a US withdrawal from Iraq, the Guardian reports. The shadowy Political Office for the Iraqi Resistance opposes al-Qaeda, and is reaching out to Arab nations and even to the UN for legitimacy. Officials say its components, however, have been responsible for thousands of attacks on US troops.

"Resistance isn't just about killing Americans without aims or goals," said a spokesman for one of the insurgent groups. "Our people have come to hate al-Qaeda, which gives the impression to the outside world that the resistance in Iraq are terrorists." The group's leaders believe a US withdrawal will begin within a year. (More Political Office for the Iraqi Resistance stories.)
