In a year characterized by high scores and sloppy majors play, Carnoustie has thus far proved the antidote; 24 players finished under par after day one, led by Spain's Sergio Garcia at a 6-under 65. Carnoustie was Garcia's first major tournament, in 1999, when he hit an 89 on the first day, including a triple bogey on the first hole.
After a birdie to start things off, Garcia remarked to his caddy, "Well, that's four better than last time." World No. 1 Tiger Woods finished the day at 69 in his historic effort to win three straight British Opens. Peter Thomson is currently the only player to have achieved that feat (1954-56).
