A federal appeals court ruled yesterday that the US government must release information on Guantanamo Bay detainees fighting their imprisonment, the Times reports. The decision will be a boon for detainees and their lawyers, who have previously found themselves blindsided in military tribunals where evidence was hidden before the proceedings began.

But the court also granted the Pentagon the right to limit topics of discussion available to detainees and their attorneys, as well as screening and expurgating their mail. And civil liberties advocates are complaining that the government will only be required to turn over information it deems "reasonably available." (More Guantanamo Bay stories.)
