The Aspen Daily News put out a special "Gonzo Edition" Saturday to honor iconic hometown journalist Hunter S. Thompson on what would have been his 70th birthday. Thompson committed suicide in February, 2005. It was edited by his widow, Anita; contributors include long-time friend Ralph Steadman and Walter Isaacson, president of the Aspen Institute.
Thompson "would have been distressed but not surprised by what has happened in this country," composer David Amram, a close friend of Thompson, told the AP. "He forecast all this just like Jonathan Swift did centuries earlier in England." One of Thompson's more famous quips was that Richard Nixon represented "that dark, venal, and incurably violent side of the American character." (More Hunter S. Thompson stories.)
