Madoff Whistleblower Shrinks From Spotlight

Harry Markopolos, the accountant who began warning the feds years ago about Bernard Madoff’s Ponzi scheme, wasn’t looking for the limelight, the Boston Globe reports. Not only is he testifying before Congress—he’s also been deluged by book and movie offers. His is “a remarkably compelling story about a guy who didn’t want to be in the middle of this,” one producer said. “It’s like Cary Grant in North by Northwest.”

Markopolos’ investigation of Madoff began as part of his job, but soon became a personal quest. He notified the Securities and Exchange Commission numerous times, to no avail. But his fame has one upside. “The next time that the government sees it’s Harry Markopolos bringing something to their attention,” his wife said, “they won't ignore it.” (More Bernard Madoff stories.)
