Worse presidents had far better ratings

The president’s newest disapproval rating, a towering 65%, is surpassed only by Harry Truman's 67% during the Korean War and Nixon’s 66%—4 days before Tricky Dick’s resignation—the Washington Post reports. The figure suggests dissatisfaction far beyond Iraq, but it also suggests  that something new is going on.

Other presidents have faced deeper crises, and fared much better, the Post notes. The Vietnam War, the Iranian hostage crisis, race riots—none sank their leaders to such low esteem. Harshness and hostility are now quicker to surface, and more likely to endure, because of the 24/7 cable news milieu, and the personal-attack culture of blogs. It's some comfort to the president, associates say, that the public hates Congress, too. (More Bush approval ratings stories.)
