Dr. Shirley Domingo didn’t recognize the savagely beaten man she treated in the Intensive Care Unit Tuesday at Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. It wasn’t until her brother called later that evening that she realized the truth: It was her own father. “It was a shock,” she said yesterday at a press conference, tears on her face.

The father, Damaso Domingo, died Thursday from injuries sustained in the attack. “He was a kind, gentle person,” Shirley said. “I can’t imagine why anyone would do this to him.” Nor can police. Domingo was beaten by two unidentified assailants near his home. Police called it a “senseless crime,” saying robbery wasn’t believed to be the motive. “We really want to find these two,” one sergeant said. (More assault stories.)
