Caroline: 'I Am Withdrawing My Name'

Caroline Kennedy says she doesn't want to be a senator just now. After hours of conflicting media reports, Kennedy released a statement after midnight saying she had called Gov. David Paterson and withdrawn her name from contention because of "personal reasons," the New York Times reports. A source tells the Times  that her uncle Ted's seizure contributed to the decision.

After the Times and the New York Post reported early in the night that she was dropping out—the Post says it's because she learned she wouldn't be chosen—subsequent reports cast doubt on the claims. In fact, Kennedy herself began preparing a statement reasserting her interest in the post, the Times notes, but she then changed her mind and released the statement to clarify her withdrawal.
