Slum Dwellers Protest Slumdog

Slumdog Millionaire has drawn widespread critical praise and earned 10 Oscar nominations today, but some residents of Mumbai slums find the title insulting, the AP reports. Protesters demonstrated outside the office of Bollywood star Anil Kapoor, who appears in the film, holding signs saying "Poverty For Sale" and "I am not a dog."

The organizer of the protest said he plans to file a lawsuit to have the name changed. "The film is going to be a terrific inspiration to kids around India. It's a feel-good film, a film of hope," Kapoor said in response to the controversy. And besides, Kapoor added, "Children from the slums are actually called much worse names."
