Max, a retired drug-sniffing dog given a pair of wheels to help him move around after developing arthritis, has died of nose cancer a vet believes is linked to his police work.   (AP Photo)

A police dog's owner believes his years of sniffing drugs cost him his life, the New York Daily News reports. Max, a springer spaniel, spent 7 years helping British police bust drug offenders but had to be put down last week after developing an aggressive tumor in his nose. His vet said nose cancer is very rare in dogs and Max's job could well have been the cause.

"It is ironic the wonderful organ that made him successful in his work has been his demise," his owner said. "He was a fighter until the end and always very dignified." (More drugs stories.)
