Exit Texas for Teixeira?
Texas Rangers Mark Teixeira poses at spring training in Suprise, Ariz., Feb. 26, 2003. Power-hitting Teixeira was on the brink of being traded from the Texas Rangers to Atlanta, giving the Braves the big bat they want for their pennant push. Talks between the teams were nearing completion Monday, July...   (Associated Press)

The Braves are close to a deal with the Rangers for slugger Mark Teixeira, who will correct a power outage at first base. The Rangers will receive a handful of prospects, including majors-ready catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia. With Brian McCann installed long-term behind the plate, the Braves could afford to lose the much-sought-after rookie.

Teixeira has averaged 35 home runs per season in his first four years, and will be a major upgrade over the platoon of Craig Wilson and Scott Thorman, which batted .211. The move adds fire to an already intriguing NL East race, where slumping New York leads Atlanta by 4.5 games and Philly by 3.5. (More MLB stories.)
