9 Dead in Amsterdam Jet Crash

At least nine people died and more than 50 were injured when a Turkish Airlines flight with 135 people on board crashed while attempting to land at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport today, reports the Guardian. The Boeing 737, believed to have been coming from Istanbul, split into three sections as it came down in a field near the airport.

One of the engines lay some distance from the main wreckage in the muddy, rutted field, the Guardian reports, but there was no sign of fire or smoke. "We were at an altitude of 600 meters when we heard the announcement that we were landing,"  one passenger reported. "We suddenly descended a great distance as if the plane fell into turbulence.
