Mount Redoubt erupted in Alaska, but Bobby Jindal is feeling the heat in Louisiana, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports. Democrats are raking the governor over the coals for scoffing at “something called volcano monitoring” as an example of wasteful spending in his televised speech last month. “It’s not a laugh line and it’s not a sound bite in Alaska,” said a spokesman for Sen. Mark Begich.

In his speech, Jindal derided volcano monitoring along with other stimulus provisions he deemed wasteful. “Instead of monitoring volcanoes, what Congress should be monitoring is the eruption of spending in Washington,” he said. Now critics are pointing out that the Alaska Volcano Observatory was able to warn the public before Redoubt erupted, and that Louisiana of all states should understand the need to guard against natural disasters.
