The gunman burst into Binghamton's American Civic Association community center, and before the receptionists really had time to react, he’d shot them both. He probably believed he’d killed them both, too. But one of them was only playing dead, and she was the one to call 911, MSNBC reports. “She’s a hero in her own right,” said the police chief.

Hiding under a desk, the receptionist stayed on the phone for 90 minutes, feeding a steady stream of information to police even as she bled from the wound to her abdomen. She “very likely saved a number of lives,” the police chief said. (More Binghamton, NY stories.)
